Pronunciation Lab

The sounds that trip everyone up.

Eight sounds English speakers stumble on most. Press play to hear each example word spoken aloud, using your browser's own voice — no headphones required, but they help.

/u/
tu Round your lips as if to whistle, tongue forward — nothing like the English 'you'.
/ou/
vous Lips rounded and pushed forward, like the 'oo' in 'boot' but tighter.
/ã/
grand A nasal 'ah' — let air pass through your nose, don't finish the 'n'.
/ɛ̃/
pain A nasal 'eh' — think 'ang' without closing your throat at the end.
/ʁ/
rouge The French R comes from the back of the throat, almost gargled — not rolled.
/ɥ/
huit A quick glide between 'u' and the next vowel — squeeze it in fast.
/ə/
le A soft, almost swallowed 'uh' — barely pronounced, never stressed.
/j/
fille Like the 'y' in 'yes' — the double-L here is not an English L sound.
Conversation

Phrases you'll actually reach for.

Real exchanges, sorted by situation. Listen to each line, then try saying it back before you check the English.

Bonjour, je voudrais un café, s'il vous plaît. Hello, I'd like a coffee, please.
C'est pour ici ou à emporter ? Is that for here or to go?
L'addition, s'il vous plaît. The bill, please.
Est-ce que je peux avoir la carte ? Could I have the menu?
